To the English Monarch, to the English Borough-holding Lord to the English Borough-holding Squire, the greatest happiness of the horse by which his equipage is drawn forms not any part of the direct objects of his pursuit he cares not at the expence of what agency on the part of the beast the enjoyment derived from the briskness of the motion is extracted. But to the production of the desired briskness /the enjoyment/ full and regular feeding together with other pleasures /not to speak of other comforts/ are necessary: the interests of the irrational and enslaved animal is thus to a certain degree associated with that of the rational and enslaving one. In /Exactly in/ the same way as between the two rational animals, the enslaving and the enslaved are the interests of the enslaved animal associated with those of the enslaving animal, and accordingly provided for. Between the cases of the two enslaved animals one difference however has place: and by this difference the case of the rational enslaved animal is placed under a manifest and no inconsiderable disadvantage /disadvantage, nor that an inconsiderable one/ The enslaved irrational animal is seldom an object of hatred to the enslaving animal nor ever of any such hatred as is constant persevering, inveterate and unassuageable: nor yet an object of disgust and contempt. But to that same enslaving animal the irrational enslaved animal is an object not only of hated, constant, persevering, inveterate and unassuageable but moreover of disgust and contempt.

Leaving the vegetable world as before, he had left the incorporeal world undivided, he performed the operation of division in the same way with the animal world as he had proceeded with the corporeal: included in this aggregate he observed two ulterior aggregates, one in which were included all animals endowed with reason, viz. human creatures, in the other all animals not endowed with that transcendant gift: which last without further division or distinction he drove together in one flock under the name of brutes; and with these rational beings he peopled the one, as with the irrational ones the other of the two extreme branches of this emblematic and instructive tree. 297

To no Monarch can the subject many ever have /ever/ failed or ever cease, to be objects of contempt and hatred: contempt, on the score of their deficiency in respect of those instruments of enjoyment which he has been suffered by them to heap up accumulate upon himself at their expence, and on the score of the intellectual weakness manifested by their patience under a course of unceasing injury: a patience produced by the conjunct powers of force, intimidation, corruption and delusion exercised by him on their minds. In so far as by the consumateness of their patience his contempt of them is rendered proportionably consummate, no such affection as that of hatred takes place: there is no cause for it. But, no sooner is the patience seen to give way to impatience than the contempt begins to give way, and hatred to take its place: and the less intense the contempt is, the more intense is the hatred. To a certain degree hatred can never fail to have place: for, his desires being constantly and necessarily insatiable and encreasing, no gratification which their patience and obsequiousness are ever disposed to afford, or are so much as capable of affording can ever keep pace with him. But when the united powers of force, intimidation, corruption and delusion beginning to fail, depredation and oppression have on their part produced discontent, and in the train of discontent, disaffection, disobedience, resistance and insurrection have in his imagination become visible, then it is that, in proportion to the fear excited by the prospect, contempt diminishes and hatred swells.
