On /After/ looking over on this view the different groupes that lay on the carpet, waiting as it were for names, the following were pitched upon as the set of names that presented themselves as most applicable /being such as might with least objection/, or rather to confess the truth, as least inapplicable - as applicable with least objection, to the /so desirable a/ purpose.

On the occasion of this research, the term argument /[argu]-ments/ ad vericundiam, was a term that presented itself somewhere, and indeed as it seemed to one[?] by more authors /than one author/ of report, as having been applied to the purpose of giving denomination and connection to a class of arguments were so many false whatsoever might be the /their/ number and variety would turn out to be so many fallacies. To the class thus formed and denominated viz. arguments ad vericundiam it was found might be referred I found those which in both senses might be termed the leading ones: articles /instruments of persuasion and deception/ which besides being second to none in the order of importance, might with advantage be placed first /claimed on conclusive grounds the precedence/ /made to stand first/ in the order of delivery and utterance /enuntiation/.

The choice had been made and acted upon for some months, when by accident it was found that of this leading class of arguments under this very name mention had been made by Locke. +

    In the arranagement /distribution/ thus made imperfections will be found the removal of which, should the removal of them be found practicable and at the same time worth the trouble, must be left to some experter hand. The denominations themselves not in every instant sufficiently distant from each other: the articles ranged under them respectively not appertaining with a degree of prosperity sufficiently exclusive to the heads under which they are placed - To these objections not to mention others /no answer that appeared/ satisfactory answer has been found.

    If, like the country which he inhabits, the mind of man were divided or divisible into departments, separated each from every other by exact and undiscompanied[?] boundary-limits, this secondary principle of division would answer its purpose to a degree of perfection much beyond what it can hope to attain as matters stand in reality in this respect /possess in this respect/.

    As it is, this principle of distinction such as it is, is the only one that presents itself as capable of being applied to this purpose with any advantage

    When, for giving facility to the operations of conception and retention, prominence and by means of prominence

    preeminence is endeavoured to be given to a few /some/ /this or that one/ of the leading ideas in any line of enquiry a foreign language has frequently, and not only frequently but usefully and successfully been thus improved for this purpose.

    On the present occasion the groupes formed by the application of the principle of division first adopted appearing too large to be easily and effectually grasped by the perceptive faculty /mind/, am ulterior principle of division a principle of subdivision was looked out for, This, taken from the divisions which in the geography of psychology have been endeavoured with how little felicity soever to be made of the territory of the mind, having presented itself as the only one applicable to the purpose, the later was the language looked to as the
