4. Sham-distinguisher's device/
This is the converse of the Lumping-Classifiers device. For the purpose of finding a justification for suppressing the suppression of some course of action which upon the whole has more of usefulness than mischeviousness in it, he presents it to you as distinugishable into two courses, one more useful than mischevious, another more mischevious than useful. Admitt this, he then proceeds in his endeavours to suppress the whole, telling you it is only to the mischevious part that his intention and endeavours are directed.
Take for example the liberty of examining into the usefulness or mischeviousness of the several arrangements included under the name of Law, Government, Constitution, &c as above, and the operations performed by the several functionaries in the exercise of their several functions. The liberrty of this examination he will acknowledge to be indisputably necessary to good government: but thou this liberty must be unaccompanied with licentiousness: for licentiousness is as /no less/ hostile to the end in view as /than/ liberty is friendly to it. Whereas between liberty and licentiousness - between the things themselves there is no real distinction: where a mans meaning /[...?]/ is to be considered as friendly to this liberty, liberty is the denomination he employs: where he is /can not but be/ seen to act seen[?] to be in actual hostility hostility disposed towards it licentiousness is the term he employs in speaking of it.

Title: [1819 Aug. 5 Fallacies 6 3.]Description: 1819 Aug. 5 Fallacies 6 3. Logical cloud-climbers or Logical high-fliers, or Political Aëronauts, Aorbprne Skirmisher's device. This is the Lumping Classifiers device carried to its highest pitch of efficiency and perfection: the term employed by him being of the most ample extent which the language of the subject affords: such as /for instance/ The Law, The Government, The Constitution. Bring to view a defect in any /arrangement belonging to any one/ of the systems so denominated the man of fallacy, the man of fallacy to the name of the particular arrangement substitutes the name of the most extensive /name of the/ system to which the arrangement belongs. We thereupon exclaim You are an enemy to Law, to Governmentt, or to the Constitution, as the case may be: and under the shelter of the fallacy he himself acts as your enemy, and by the power[?] exercised by him under the name of Law, Government and Constitution plunges you perhaps into immediate misery terminating only in death.

Title: [1819 Aug. 11 Fallacies Ch | | Logical]Description: 1819 Aug. 11 Fallacies Ch | | Logical High fliers 1 1. Exposition Confer[?] this head with that of Personalities vituperative: section ex cognoninibus: and with d\T oT\ laudative. Also with Lumping Classifier Ch. Logical High-fliers Lumping-classifiers, or Crafty-Generalizer's device, or Discrimination-extinguishers or corruption-screener's or Corruption-cloakers Device or Distinction-confounders device Nomenclature, in so far as the name is any thing more than [...?] is called a proper name - the object named /any thing more than/ an individual name, is classification: classification is has been shewn elsewhere\T (+)T\, is among the instruments of government /if by government is government./ applied to the individual object, a generic name attached proformed[?] by competent authority, attaches to the individual object or groupe of objects whatsoever properties stand already attached to that name: if the individual be a person if the class be a class of persons it attaches to all individuals belonging to that class whatsoever portions of good and evil stand already attached to whatsoever individuals that name is applicable to. To the condition of all persons /individuals/ to whom by judicial authority /appointment/ the name of felons shall have been attached, the law has attached punishment in certain shapes: to the condition of all individuals, to whom by appropriate appointment, the name of Members of Parliament shall have been attached, the law has attached certain powers: to /power in certain shapes: to the condition of/ all individuals to whom by royal appointment the name of Lords Commissioners of the Treasury shall have been attached, the law has attached certain powers and certain emoluments. /power and emolument /reward/ in certain shapes./ Performed by a legislative or other legally competent hand, classification is imperation in disguise. But for it to be productive of of that effect, objects designated by the name in question must already have been taken for subjects of a correspondent act of imposition.

Title: [1819 Aug. 5 Fallacies Arrangement]Description: 1819 Aug. 5 Fallacies Arrangement 5 2. Lumping classifiers device. The contrivances here consists in the giving to the particular object in question a denomination common to that and to another or others possessed of an opposite or otherwize different quality: lumping thus an object of neutral character with an object of bad /good/ or an object of good /bad/ character: object of goof character: an object of bad character with an object of neutral or good character. Take for example Election bribery and Election terrorism. The man of fallacy fives them the name of influences That they are modes of exercising influence can not be denied: nor can it be denied that in cases of Election influence may with propriety and utility and propriety be endeavoured to be exercised: namely that influence which leaving the will free and unoperated upon, applies itself only to the understanding /alone/. (a) For an example of the use of this fallacy See Lord Gostunes[?] Defence of the Whigs p.
