A man in no situation, a man of nothing, who in preaching sound doctrine or what to him at least appears as such, has no [...?] to keep - has nothing to lose any more than any thing to gain unless so fond[?] a hope as that of seeing it turn to use /public use/ may be to be set down to the account of gain, also how no such property &c on any such occasion operates in any perceptible degree in the character of a man of influence - one who sees no person whose interest in the character of a friend it would cost him any thing to sacrifice on an occasion of the sort in question to the interest of the whole empire, nor any person who in that same character could suppose himself or be generally supposed to have /possess/ a claim to the benefit of any such sacrifice - who is in no situation, in no /nor in any/ trust, nor on this or any other occasion has any claim to the attention of the public or any part of it unless by the having devoted some forty or fifty years to the study of the interest of mankind in the definitive field of morals and legislation any such claim /a claim to any such effect/ should be supposed to be constituted, a man so circumstanced may, if without merit, yet it is hoped without reproach, hold himself free /be allowed/ to preach on this subject sound doctrine, or at any rate what appears to him as such.

Taking up the pen with this view, instead of adopting and inferring the lessons just spoken of i.e either expressly or implicitly contained in the oration of the Right Honorable Orator, the lessons the only lessons which I can hold myself warranted in delivering on this same subject are the very reverse of his /those/.

I prefer the interests of my family to myself, my friends to my family, my country to my friends, mankind /humankind/ to my country - Such was the scale of preference professed, and probably /not improbably/ to a considerable /in no inconsiderable/ degree acted upon, by the reverend and celebrated truly venerable author of Telemachus. unaffected philanthropy of the kind and truly venerable author of Telemachus.

    {Of the Orator /political preacher/ of S t Stephen's Chapel the scale of preference, if compleated, would it seems but too probable, be rather the reverse /a subversion/ of them the same with that of the virtuous Fenelon. /Frenchman./}

Such is the order of preference which surely {by} a man of true philanthropy, (which if sound morality is /be/ resolvable into philanthropy is as much as to say a man of sound morality) would wish to see held up /up for imitation/ /up to serve as a mark for the direction of the conduct of mankind/ held up more specially in any /all/ those high /distinguished/ situations /characters/ which who by the authority with which they are /stand/ invested, and by the influence which, by such opinions as they are understood to express, they exercise in the understandings of the admiring crowd below.

Case of the woman taken in adultery.

The ground of the instruction /lesson/ doctrine[?]/ course taken on this occasion by

Jesus on this occasion is susceptible of two interpretations: according to one he

lays down a principle is laid down by him inconsistent with the existence of all

government: according to the other it is of the number of those lessons of his by

which such well-merited censure is passed on the Mosaic law. it conveys /serves for

the conveyance of/ one of his /a/ well merited censures /censure/ on the Mosaic law:

the reader will adopt that one of them which presents itself /appears/ as the most

reasonable, and most consonant to the character of Jesus.

According to the case /In the […?] case/ as reported, an adulteress taken in the act

stands for judgment, and for the purpose of making out against him a ground of

accusation on the score of contempt towards the established law and government, his

Little character. Good heavens, how unfortunate! Could I have thought it! {Oh that I had been a hundred miles distance!} Oh yes, sure enough: The Devil created those colchicums, at that very instant, for that very purpose. I will write to Linnæus this very instant to blot out the whole tribe of them. That I should have been such a Marplot! Yet who could have thought it? I shall never see a colchicum again without bestowing a curse upon it. - Oh the cursed colchicums!

This scene /The conversation/ is reported with a degree of fidelity such as in lives and memory is not often exemplified /equalled/, and which in all circumstances in the least material can /could/ not be exceeded.

Had it not been for the colchicums, the living might have been obtained - who knows but it might?, the borough settled, and the breast /bosom/ /case[?]/ of the great character eased of /freed from/ all disturbance. Now upon what sort of footing would it have been settled? the illegitimate or the "legitimate"? upon the footing of any illegitimate or upon the footing of the " legitimate rights of influence"? Not the illegitimate assuredly: for in the shape of " dry and sordid

gain" where would any thing have been to be sure in /throughout/ the whole business? In the first place the expecting youth, the man of future /[...?]/ contingent piety, would have received the Holy Ghost. Nothing " dry" or " sordid" here[?]. After the Holy Ghost he would have received the benefice: nothing dry or sordid in the benefice. Last of all /Lastly/ he would have received the tithes: and now indeed, now, afar[?], and in virtue of the godliness comes the " gain": true the gain: but still nothing " dry" (it is to be hoped) or " sordid" in it.
