To preserve so convenient a state of things from the attacks of the innovator, either of two systems serves.

One is, that of the optimist: in the language /words/ of Pope as applied to universals, whatever is is right: or in the language /words/ of Blackstone as applied to particulars - everything is as it should be.

The other is the system of the lacrymist or say of the pessimist - of the hypocondriac, or that other sort of man whose name begins with hypo. Bad indeed it is, most deplorably /lamentably/ bad: but it can't be otherwise: it is among the fruits of original sin, and comes of the unfortunate longing our /the/ universal grandmother was served with for the unwholesome apple.

    Had Adam and Eve remained childless, the human species would never have received, at least from human lips, a common name. On that supposition himself and Eve would have been all the human beings whom Adam could have had need to speak of: herself and Adam all that Eve could have had need to speak of: for any common name including these two still less for a common name including other human beings in an indefinite number could either of these our first parents have had any use.

    In the language of the modern Hebrews and even in the language of the Hebrew Scriptures, the same word which is employed to designate the earliest individual of the human species, man, is employed to designate the species likewise. A name employed constantly by Adam for designating himself to the exclusion of Eve could never have been employed or pitched upon for designating both of them together.

    /To/ Corruption, it has already been observed, does not require a corruptor /a corruptor is not necessary/: no more than in the physical order of things, it does a ferment. {Apply a ferment you may accelerate the process: but, without a ferment, if situation be favourable the process will take place of itself.     But where there is no corruptor, there is no act of corruption: no act in any part committed, in which either punishment, legal punishment can attach, or so much as shame.

    In this equally safe and sure way it is in /to the extent of the instance of/ many more instances /persons/ out of a hundred, or rather in nine hundred and ninety nine instances out of a thousand, the bonds /chains/ of dependence are fastened on, the work of corruption done.

    Here is the effect of - the utmost effect that could be hoped or wished for from - the grossest and most extensive system of corruption /profligacy/ produced, and not so much as a single act of corruption necessary to the production of it: not a single act of which any man can be so much as accused.

    It is only by individuals - by this or that insulated individual - that to gain any undue advantage /point/ any thing, to which any such imputation as that of corruption can attach, need ever be done.
