Paul an Apostle?

Ch Vision

§. 2. Revelation ambiguous[?]

 This under Ch Visions. §. indirectly stated[?] or under Paul’s title or Paul’s Visit 3 d to Jerusalem?

Under another hand /a succeeding hand/ we shall find him in an Epistle /a letter/ of his to the disciples in Galatia declaring positively and in the most pointed terms that the Gospel which he preached was received by him not of men but of /by/ revelation: by the revelation of Jesus Christ. […?] then if so, at

After or before the occasion on which this speech was /is represented as being/ spoken but according to his account as given in his Epistle to the Galatians at least seventeen years at the least after the time mentioned by him as the time of this /such/ his conversion he scruples not to assure /inform/ these same Galatians that neither from nor after man received the Gospel he preached was neither ‘ received by him of man’ nor otherwise taught to him than ‘by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

§. 2 or 3. Revelation pretended to by Paul - inconsistency of the pretension with his own accounts.

This revelation at what time on what occasion /conjuncture/ at what time was it made? and what did it amount to? { Put last what follows?} In his speech to the Jerusalem mob which was spoken almost at the close of his adventures /made on his fourth visit, being a visit subsequent to this which is spoken of in this part of his Epistle to the Galatians/ as reported by the author of the Acts, no trace of /not the slightest mention of/ any such revelation is to be found. On the road to Damascus, instead of giving him any such information what the voice gives him is - a put-off, referring him for it to Ananias. When he sees Ananias, Ananias tells him indeed that he have been chosen by God to see the Just One and that he is to be the Just One’s witness unto all men’, but tells him not what his evidence is to consist of. According to this same speech, at another time indeed viz. when being at Jerusalem in the temple, and praying and in a trance if by the Just One is /he means/ the Lord, so it is that he does see that same Just One but except that the sooner he can get out of Jerusalem no more does he on this occasion learn from the Just One than he had learnt before.

    Ch Paul an Apostle?

    §. 3. Revelation […?]

Of what, according to his account of the matter passed on the occasions on which according to his own account of the matter he did not see Jesus, and on which, unless the small packets of vague generality words can be stated as containing a revelation made to him by Jesus, no revelation at all was made to him by Jesus - of these in his speech to King Agrippa and his subsequent speech to the Jerusalem mob he gives his two so different not to say discordant accounts. but Of any revelation that was ever given to him, no account for any thing that we see, did he ever give to any body. By the Revelation what is that we are to understand? is not information, - is not information in some shape or other, information relative to /having for its subject/ past events /occurrence/ and states of things included in the idea /import/ of it? Precept, yes: precept concerning /prescribing/ what he is /himself is expected/ to do: but of information information relative to others /the date[?]/ persons or things in times past, not so much as a /a single/ syllable. Can that be the revelation which of itself was to put him upon a level with the whole fellowship of the select servants and constant companions of Jesus?

Revelation - supposing any thing to which without impropriety or falshood the name could be applied really received by him, - it must, if in what he says to the Galatians he is to be believed, have been some years before his abovementioned trance at Jerusalem: trance: it must have been but a very short time after his receiving the two put-offs: viz. first from Jesus to Ananias, and then from Ananias to nobody. For of this revelation, supposing him to have received what according to him was the practical object? it was that he might present God’s son […?] Jesus among the heathen.

Upon receiving it what accordingly did he do? He communicated not the information, whatever it was, to any body: he made no communication of it even to the Apostles: this is what he did not do: what he did do was - repairing to Arabia, which he did immediately: then to Damascus: then after three years, three years from what epoch reckoned does not appear: whether that of his first sallying forth viz. to Arabia, or from the close of his subsequent stay at Damascus.

    Ch Paul an Apostle?

Gal. I and II Paul after conversion 3 years before he saw more Apostles than Peter and James: thereafter 14 years not said that he saw more than these two and John.

Flexible[?] the material of which Peter was made: witness his denial of Jesus. […?] of Paul in his Epistle to Galatians, […?] this […?]

In that which stands second, in addition to himself, Apollos alone is mentioned: Peter not.

But between himself and Peter, between those two alone was the schism the competition. As to Apollos, whatever else he was, no Apostle was he, no Apostle did he pretend to be: in point of time /in order/ not till after Paul, in so far as Paul himself is to be believed speaking of the Corinthians to the Corinthians (I Cor. III. 6) did he come: ‘I have planted’ (says he) ‘Apollos watered: and presently afterwards (v. 8.) ‘he that planteth’ (says he) ‘and he that watereth are one.

With Peter therefore - with this chief /chiefly favoured/ of the Apostles was his interference - with /against/ him /that same chief of the Apostles/ his contention from the beginning.

Moreover against that same chief of the Apostles did his contention continue at /to/ /even unto/ the end.

Three years as above /hereinafter/ mentioned was the time that after Paul’s alledged conversion had elapsed, before he saw either Jerusalem or any of the Apostles. Fourteen years more before he saw for the next time that same source and chief seat of the religion which he preached.

Then it was that face to face if he himself is to [be] believed, he had with Peter that dispute of which his own account has reached us.

This visit of which we have the account from Paul himself is it the same as that important visit, of which his self-alledged companion has given his account in the Acts? If so as it is the second of his recorded visits to Jerusalem after his alledged conversion so is it the last.

If so then of this much deprecated and […?] intrusion a schism in the Church of Jesus between the original and the self-intended[?] pillar of it, was the main fruit.
