Peter’s exploits

With /From/ any thing that was done either at Lydda or at Saron at either of these two inland places it appears not however that the light which […?] /shone/ afterwards so happily on the Gentiles received any direct influence. In this point of view it is in Joppa and Cæsarea that we must look for were /became/ the stations of importance.

But though the exact plan /the […?]/ of operation is a task[?] which serves[?] to […?] one almost too difficult to be attempted /for our means of accomplishment/ yet the principal part of the machinery provided and employed seems not to be very deep below the surface - it consists in the pair of corresponding visions: viz. that of Peter and that of Cornelius.

His first exploit is the one performed at Lydda upon the paralytic Æneas. His next exploit is the resuscitation of Tabitha at Joppa.

At no /every/ one of all these three places there was or at any rate at Lydda and Joppa already established as it should seem a colony of converts. But it is to Joppa that the Gentiles are indebted /represented as/ /spoken/ for the first […?] of that illumination which they were afterwards to so vast an extent they were destined to receive.

     Superseded this and the next page: they suppose the visions &c got up by Peter not by the Acts.

    By occupation Peter was by occupation a fisherman. Had the sea coast or any part of it been included in the field of his commercial operation an acquaintance more or less extensive with this or that one of those languages which with reference to the Hebrew were foreign languages might have fallen to his share. But it appears not that his professional industry /the exercise of this his trade/ had carried him to any other than the inland waters. Under these circumstances naturally speaking the field of religious enterprize /his missionary zeal/ would not carry him to any great distance from the seat of his spiritual influences. Lydda Saron Joppa and Cæsarea are accordingly the only places the names of which occurr in the narrative of the only expedition of which any particular account has reached us. Of these four places no one is without the limits of Judæa: Joppa and Cæsarea are indeed sea ports /both of them on the Sea Coast/. But by this time the prospects of the fisherman, now an apostle and the chief of the Apostles, had received considerable extension, and the field of his labours proportionable enlargement.

    If as seems by no means improbable there was a foundation /groundwork/ in truth for the account given of this principal and almost only part of his atchievements reported /narrated/ by the nameless author of the Acts, it presents /seems/ no easy matter to understand to deduce from it at which exact time by what means and by which the hope /idea/ /prospect/ of extending the kingdom of Jesus over the Gentiles of including the Gentiles in the /such/ conquests of the dominion of Jesus first presented itself to his mind nor what was the plan /scheme/ /course/ of operation which antecedently to the commencement of his enterprize /excursion/ he had planned.

    From the Greek word which has been rendered by the English word throughout, it looks as if by this term a sort of regular circuit had been established: and that it was in the course of one of these circuits that he journeyed /came/ to Lydda and Saron the only two inland places of which on this occasion any mention is made.

    Ch. XVIII Peter’s Exploit

    Introduction

    CH XVIII Period between Paul’s first and second visits to Jerusalem - Peter’s acts and sayings.

    §. 1. Introductory observations.

    Next After the short interval occupied by the account of Paul’s first visit /of Paul/ to Jerusalem and that of the occasion and commencement of the second, we come again to Saint Peter. During the former period he was the principal actor, during the present among /of/ Apostles and other trustees he is /was/ the only one.

    In the history of this period characters brought upon the stage /persons presented to view/ are we have but one Apostle, Peter: one convert but he a distinguished one: the centurion Cornelius: two subjects of as many miracles of the somative class, two subjects viz. Æneas the paralytic cured of a palsy at Lydda, and Tabitha in Greek Dorcas, in English, She-Goat, resuscitated.

    Of visions, we have one pair: viz. that of Peter that of the heathen Centurion: preparing him for recusing the Gospel at the hand /by the mouth/ of Peter: a corresponding one that of Peter preparing him to administer that means of salvation /balance /cordial/ to the mind/.

    Ch Peter’s Exploits

    Introduction

    Though with reference to the main subject /business/ viz. the transactions between /intercourse of/ Paul and Peter what passed in the interval between the first and the second of these his first recorded visits of Paul’s to Jerusalem form as it were but an episode, yet as serving as it does to carry on the thread of the sacred history and give a sort of connection how loose so ever to the different /several/ purpose, the matter with which this interval is occupied presents a /some/ demand for notice.

    Having set down the new and not yet publickly[?] recognized Apostle at the place of his nativity /birth/ and spoken of a time of indefinite duration an undefined length of time, during which rest /peace/ was enjoyed by the new religion /Church/ and proselytes multiplied and the number of proselytes encreased takes up the chief of the Apostles Peter and sends him forth in quest of adventures and narrates his atchievements and adventures.

    He had planned /chalked[?]/ out for himself if on this point the author of the Acts is correct /to be believed/ a very extensive progress /campaign/.

    In the course of it the first place he is mentioned as that at which he /it/ commenced his progress /it/ is Lydda

    In this place he cures Æneas of the palsy: and by /of/ this exploit /atchievement/ the conversion of all the inhabitants not only of Lydda but of Saron is the fruit.

    Acts IX 32 33. 34.

    Passing thence to Joppa he resuscitates Tabitha, in Greek Dorcas: and of this atchievement it being known throughout Joppa the conversion of many in that maritime town we are told was the fruit.
