Ch Asceticism

§ Positive proof

Moses repealed

In /From/ one passage /saying/ alone comes any thing like a disavowal of this

intention (the intention to expose /hold up/ to view the incongruity of the Mosaic

law and thereby to change the opinion /belief/ of its divine and supernatural origin

be seen /discovered//inferred/. In one saying alone viz. as it stands in Matthew I am

not come to destroy. Think not that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets: I

am not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and

earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be

fulfilled.

Mat. v. 17

 Copy down to the end of v. 22

19. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments and shall teach

men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do

and teach them, the same shall be called just in the kingdom of heaven.

20. For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness

of the Scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

21. Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and

whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment.

22. But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause,

shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca,

shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in

danger of hell fire.

    ''.2. Ends (of the Technical)

Seek Ye, said Jesus christ /saith Jesus/, seek ye the kingdom of heaven and his /its/ righteousness, and all these things (no matter to the present purpose what things, +) shall be added unto you: a precept which if delivered in modern times and in the language of modern times might have run thus. Honesty is the best policy: or thus: the rules of privity are also rules of prudence.

The converse of this precept might have served in the shape of an instruction to the man of law. For kingdom of heaven put /read/ mammon or any other opposite kingdom, for righteousness, unrighteousness or more specifically extortion. Seek ye what is your direct, your primary object the kingdom of mammon (or in the rougher language of the century before the last the kingdom of hell and its unrighteousness (the unrighteousness that leads to it) and your secondary, your collateral object, ease, shall be added unto you.

    Samples of nonsense

    12. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

    13. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves

unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

    14. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

    15. What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace?God forbid.

    16. Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

    17. But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from ye heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

    18. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

    19. I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.

    20. For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.

    21. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

    22. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

    23. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

    Jesus’s allusions

    1. Matt. x. 14. And whosoever shall not receive you (viz.

the twelve Apostles sent out to preach to the Jews alone /only/ x. 5. 6.) nor hear any words, when you depart out of that town, or city,

shake off the dust of your feet. 15. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more

tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha, in the day of judgment, than for that

    city.

    2. Matt. xi. 23. 24. And thou Capernaum, which art exalted

unto heaven, shalt be brouhgt down to hell: for of the mighty works which have been

done in thee had been done in Sodom it would have remained until this day. 24. But I

say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom, in the day of

    judgment, than for thee.

    3. Mark vi. 11. And whosoever shall not receive you (viz.

the twelve Apostles sent out two and two to preach (no [...?] as to the persons to be

preached to) vi. 7. 8. 9. 10.) nor hear you, when he depart

thence, shake off the dust under your feet, for a testimony against them. Verily I

say unto you, it shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of

    judgment than for that city.

    4. Luke x. 12. But I say unto you (viz. the ‘ other seventy’ sent two and two before his face into every city

and place whither he himself would come x. 1.) that it

shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city.
