5. Next comes a whole string of passages in Ezekiel Ch. xvi.

Speaking of Jerusalem ‘Behold (says he v. 44) every one that useth proverbs shall use this proverb against thee, saying, As is the mother so is the daubhter.

‘45. Then art thy mother’s daughter, that lotheth her husband and her children, and thou {art} the sister of thy sisters, which lothed their husbands and their children: your mother {was} an Hittite, and your father an Amorite.’

46. ‘And thy elder sister is}Samaria, she and her daughters that dwelt at the left hand: and thy younger sister that dwelleth at thy right hand, Sodom and her daughters.’

‘47. Yet hast thou not walked after their ways, nor done after their abominations: but as {if that were a very little {thing} thou wast corrupted more than they in all thy ways.’

‘48. As I live, saith the Lord God, Sodom thy sister hath not done, she nor her daughters, as thou hast done thou and thy daughters.’

‘49. Behold this was the iniquity of thy sides Sodom, Pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.’

[50.] MS ’40.’ ‘And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore took them away as I saw good.’

[51.] MS ’41.’ ‘Neither hath Samaria committed half of thy sins; but thou hast multiplied thine abominations more than they and hast justified thy sisters in all thine abominations which thou hast done.’

    Ezekiel xvi.

    52. ‘Thou also which hast judged thy sisters, bear thine own shame for thy sins that thou hast committed more abominable then they; they are more righteous than thou: yea, be thou confounded also, and bear thy shame, in that thou hast justified thy sisters.’

    53. ‘When I shall bring again their captivity, the captivity of Sodom and her daughters, and the captivity of Samaria and her daughters, then {will I bring again} the captivity of thy captives in the midst of them.’

    54. ‘That thou mayest bear thine own shame, and mayest be confounded in all that thou hast done, in that thou art a comfort to them.’

    55. ‘When thy sisters, Sodom and her daughters shall return to their former estate, and Samaria and her daughters shall return to their former estate, then thou and thy daughters shall return to your former estate.’

    56. ‘For thy sister Sodom was not mentioned by thy mouth in the day of thy pride.’

    57. ‘Before thy wickedness was discovered, as at the time of {thy} reproach of the daughters of Syria, [and] MS ‘all’. all {that are} round about her, the daughters of the Philistines which despise thee round about.’

    59. ‘Thou hast borne thy lewdness and thy abominations saith the Lord.’

    60. ‘For thus saith the Lord God, I will even deal with thee as thou hast done which hast despised the oath in breaking the covenant.’

    1. Leviticus XX. 10.

    And the man that committeth adultery with another man’s wife, even he that committeth

    adultery with his neighbour’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be

    put to death.

    2. Deuteronomy XXII. 22. If a man be found lying with a woman married to an husband,

    then they shall both of them die, both the man that lay with

    the woman, and the woman: so shalt thou put away evil from Israel.

    3. Deuteronomy XXIV. 1. 2. 3. 4. When a man hath taken a wife and married her, and it

    come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some

    uncleanness in her, then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house.

    3. And if the latter husband hate her, and write her a bill of divorcement and giveth

    it in her hand, and sendeth her out of his house, or if the

    latter husband die, which took her to be his wife,

    4. Her former husband which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife,

    after she is defiled; for that is abomination before the Lord: and thou shat not

    cause the land to sin, which the Lord thy God giveth thee for

    an inheritance.

    4. Deuteronomy XVII. 2 to 7. If there be found among you, within any of thy gates

    which the Lord thy God giveth thee, man or woman, that hath wrought wickedness in the

    sight of the Lord thy God, in transgressing his covenants,

    3. And hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the Sun, or moon,

    or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded;

    4. And it be told thee, and thou hast heard of it, and enquired diligently, and,

    behold it be true, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought in Israel:

    5. Then shalt thou bring forth that man or that woman, which have committed that

    wicked thing, unto thy gate, even that man or that woman, and shall stone them with

    stones, till they die.

    6. At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of

    death be put to death; but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death.

    7. The hands of the witnesses shall be first upon him to put him to death, and

    afterwards the hands of all the people. So thou shalt put the evil away from among

    you.
