Aug. r 13 th 1783. O.S.

I had not been for these 10 days at Sir James's for a reason I may

let you may know perhaps hereafter, till just now when

he tells me that he sends off a Courier in 2 or 3 hours. We are here 7

versts from Petersbourg where I have a couple of sheets of letter for you

and I do not think I shall be able to send for it in time. There is however

half an hour before dinner in which I will give you some little

account of myself.

You will know before this that I was obliged to decline being

Charge d'affaires on account of its standing in the

way of my pursuits here. I did not regret this so much as the news from Mr

Fitzherbert promised his arriving before even the departure of Sir J.

Nothing is as yet settled for me here. Upon the Empress's seeming disposed

to give me the choice of the part of the country in which I would be

employed, I gave Mr. Besborotky her Secretary a paper in which I

pointed out the mines & Saltworks in Siberia which I preferred they

were as you may imagine the most important which the country afford.

'tis true She at the same time had mentioned some mines near

Olenitz situated between this and Arcangel at about 450 versts only

from hence which She imagined I might prefer as being nearer. But as I

conceived that the establishments in Siberia by being of greater importance

Day after day have I been expecting to be fixed in this country in her Majesty's service, and have been very unwilling to write to you till I could let you know this for certain. As however I have learnt today that it is impossible my business can be settled for these ten days to come, I must let you know how the matter stands. When my being to be Charge d'affaires at Sir James's departure reached the Empress's ears, she told the person who spoke of it that he certainly must be mistaken, that it could not be, for that she was to have me in her service. At the same time some persons whose judgement is of importance gave me to understand that they feared such an intention of mine might hurt me with respect to my engagements in this country. As soon as Sir James understood this he desired me by no means to run the risk of losing the Empress's favour by such a step; so that a letter coming from M r Fitzherbert about the same time mentioning his intention of coming out here very soon, I took that opportunity of giving up the Charge d'affaires business and letting the people here know of my doing it and of my readiness to enter into the service as soon as possible. Sir James also let Mr Besberotky know of its being to oblige him that I had had thoughts of untertaking that business, but that he would by no means

I have just been writing to my father to give him some little account of my love matter and telling him at the same time of my being in all probability left Charge d'affaires

here for 2 or 3 months at Sir James's departure. It is today only that Sir James proposed it to me and wrote to Mr Fox to acquaint him with his intentions of leaving the business in my hands. I believe you have had very little expectation of my ever being engaged in political business and I believe not much inclined to imagine me fit for it. If I am not, I shall endeavour to make myself so while Sir James is yet here, and for that purpose I will begin to go to school to him tomorrow. Besides the opportunity this may afford me of making friends at home, it cannot but assist my views here of which I shall give you a some account in a packet I send by sea. Your poor brother is become very bare in several necessary articles, but in none so intollerably so as in linnen. A reinforcement of a dozen of shirts is absolutely unavoidable they would be much cheaper & better if you could contrive to send them from England washed and marked.

No time was as yet fixed for the departure of the English Courier who

has been here some months and by whom I have given you to expect

news from me, but as another is just arrived with the news of the change

in the ministry M r Fitzherbert dispatches one of them as soon as

possible. A small part only of what I had written in readiness for the

opportunity will be to be sent now as my circumstances of late

    are entirely changed.

First I have to tell you that my love

affair is entirely put an end to. Gen: Landskoy [The Empress's favourite] immediately on

the death of the Uncle without any application on my part to him

had interested himself so much in the affair as to let the aunt

& mother know that the Empress thought they did wrong to oppose

the young Countess's inclinations and promised that her

Majesty would promote me and do anything to give them

satisfaction. This only irritated the Aunt the more. When the

Uncle & father came the girl was watched more closely than ever:

yet she found means to write to me frequently and every body

seemed to be in our interests. She was ill, kept her room, and

her bed, and allarmed her friends, but could not soften them.

she offered to make her escape with me, or take any steps which

I would point out, could She but escape the vigilance of her keepers.

She offered money & diamonds to one of her chambermaids,

but could not gain her assistance. When things were in this situation

the parents summoned all this force against her, and at length

after having her Mother at her feet foaming at the mouth

through despair, She, after half an hour's reflection sat down

and wrote to me a renounce. telling me that all had been tried

and that a sense of the unhappiness She caused in her family
