§.2. Causes of Suicide Unlawfulness

To pour the [...?] of worms into his wound.

That in the present life misery to how extreme a pitch soever screwed may shut out of all prospect of relief/ feel itself divested of all hope the votaries of Christianity /pretended followers of Jesus/ have [...?] the unlawfulness of suicide.

[...?] in man's nature are two circumstances of felicity to the value of which he seems scarce as yet to /be/ have been sufficiently aware /sensible/.

Two circumstances of felicity, the one of which is enjoyed by him in common with the inferior animals, but of which the other is all his own.

Of his best enjoyments, were the day on which (spite of all his reluctance) they are doomed to cease to have their end foreknown to them, the sweetness might be over-powered /turned to bitterness by this /so/ [...?] /a/ fount of the tree of knowledge. /Almost to the last/ This fatal day is accordingly almost to the last concealed from his eyes.

Of this treasure it is not /has not been/ in the power of the Christian Minister /[...?]/ altogether to bereave him. The worst they can do is to hold up perpetually to his view the approaching and certain and near approaching loss of it, and this is among their most constant /strenuous/ labours.

    To this invention of modern religion /modern refinement of religious tyranny/ it would be injustice to the memory of Jesus to pass unnoticed /without notice/ that in any thing that ever fell from his lips /to judge from the only memorials that are left to us/ it has any the least countenance.

    By /In the way of/ his precepts he has not forbidden it: in the way of examples he had preached it.

    To escape from the chosen death /cross/ was it not in the power of his omnipotence? If it was then was his last and most important and /in their interpretation at least/ /according to their/ most beneficent and godlike act an act of suicide.

    An act of suicide? and a lesson too. Among his commands to his followers was it not that they should act as he acted as well as suffer as he suffered and act as he preached?

    Merit consisting in repentance in the pain of repentance, (1) /the/ an occasion for repentance was to be made. That this merit might not be effaced by ordinary sins or the indifferent transitions of ordinary life, (2) the [...?] of the meritorious person was to be closed by it it was to fill up /the last act and/ the last scene of life. What then was the means to /be/ chosen for bringing life to /its close/ a termination at the exactly proper period. (3) A man was not to die /by/ with his own hand: that would have been suicide, suicide a crime and a sin that admitts of no repentance /atonement/, suicide the sin against the Holy Ghost excepted, the most unatoneable and most /unpardonable/ irremissionible of all sins. It was therefore to be the hand of another. (4) But what other hand so attainable, and at the same time so apt as that of the executioner of public justice? This was not suicide: no more than Jesus's death. Attainable? but by what means? (5) There was but one, and that was the comitting a crime, the /co-operating in the/ punishing of which would thus become a part of his public duty. (6) /What remained was/ There remained nothing but the /making/ choice of the crime: and in this choice the same religious and christian spirit by which the idea had been suggested still manifested itself /bore away/. A crime was thought of by which crime as it was more good than evil /would/ was to be done, since /the salvation of a soul/ the securing of a [...?] soul against all perils of damnation would be the fruit of it.

    2. Choose the close of life repentance will then not be obliterated by first offences.

    3. Close not life by your own hand: that excludes repentance. (hence suicide worst of sins, sin against Holy Ghost excepted)

    6. Which that Christianity more good than evil may be done by it. should be infanticide age earlier than that of sin.

    In this single reflection, if well applied might Christians secure votaries of the religion of Jesus, find deliverance from the converted persecutor of their predecessors, St Paul, with his obscure ambiguous, unintelligible self-contradictory and gloomy metaphysics: And surely if in obscurity, ambiguity, unintelligibility, self-contradictoriness and gloominess there be any thing delicious enough of all these sweets to satisfy a reasonable appetite might be found in the four Gospels when taken by themselves.
