Ch. 4. Mischief. 2. Terrors

3. As to probability, for calculating the amount of this dimension there are two data: 1. the straight gate: 2. the sin against the Holy Ghost.

In the parable of the Gates as it may be called, an assurance is given, given in terms the clearness of which is not often equalled /in this source of information/ especially in parables, that the number of those by whom this state of torment is escaped is small /very small/ in comparison of the number of those who are consigned to it. Numbers are not given: for in those days by that /species in/ /measure/ degree of correctness /correct thinking/ which require numbers for the expression of it, much progress had not as yet been made. But that be the man who he will, the chances of escaping from this state of endless torment /every-beginning and never-abating, and conception passing torment/ torment was against him in a high degree against him, is plainly declared at least as plainly declared as in that same book any thing is declared.

    2

Against his bitterest pains he has this assured /specific/ remedy, that on condition of putting an end to his pleasures likewise. it depends upon himself, and upon himself altogether to put an end to them whenever he pleases.

Thus throughout the whole course of his life /existence/ from the time that the existence of their power over himself is known to him, the option he has is /an option ever before him/ between a sense of pleasurable sensations and the absence of all painful ones.

To deprive him of this /consolation/ comfort the labours of his religious guardians have been not less /[...?]/ assiduous, and /whatsoever may have/ / as it should seem/ perhaps rather more successful.

Having converted life /the present existence/ into a sense of torment this work could not have been compleat had they not converted it into a prison.

 Wrong [...?] because by knowing the Sin of the H. Ghost man may avoid certainty of damnation.

When a state of /insufferable/ torment /was being/ is the state in which a man is predestined to pass an endless life /state of existence/ by what particular incident it may happen to him to be conducted to it is matter rather of curiosity than use.
