Ch.8. Mischief 6. Antipathy for belief

§.1. Subject of the Chapter

1. On my part difference of offences a work of enmity[?] 1.[...?] 2.[...?]

2. Enmity the greater the greater the importance: religion the greater.

3. The contempt naturally involved in disbelief the enmity is embittered.

4. [...?] supposed enmity towards and wrath of God, justified.

5. Antipathy to Atheists the highest on the scale [...?] of the [...?]

6. [...?] [...?] thus induced. As brandy to women so jug to juggists.

7. How by this antipathy the judicial faculty is enfeebled, see hereunder.

Towards persons differing in a /any/ manner which is considered as material and important in their opinion respecting religion, a state of internal and cordial amity is scarce possible, a state of bitter hatred altogether natural.

Between man and man entertaining on the subject of religion difference esteemed by them of importance, antipathy, up to hatred is natural and little less than considerable.

    Ch.7. Mischief. 7. Producing antipathy towards others on the score of belief /or non-belief viz/ in religious persuasion, and the consequences deduced from it.

    Subject always to the exception above noticed /brought to view/

    With the exception of the case noticed as above, viz. in so far as it is necessary for the purpose of /to the purpose of repelling greater/ in the [...?] of evil, the mischievousness of antipathy the capacity of /by which/ this passion /affection/ to produce any other effect than bad ones has been also already brought to view. As much mischievousness as /flowing/ from whatever source /distilled/ /deduced/ produced has already been brought to view.

    Not less notorious than violent are the manifestations /evidences/ and fruits of /the/ antipathy that have been produced by religion in general and the Christian form of it /Christianity/ in particular.

    /By/ No [...?] that renders a man /by which a man is rendered/ a nuisance to himself can avoid rendering him /he escape being rendered/ in a greater or less degree a nuisance to others?

    On the terms of which /without revelation/ natural religion in a slight degree if in any, /under/ revelation in a deplorably heavy a degree is the source, we have seen the cause /source/ of perpetual /meanness/ torment to himself: in the same terms may be seen the cause of that /those/ antipathies towards others of which under revelation the extent has been so all comprehensive, and the fruits so bitter and so conspicuous.

    By these terrors man /is/ has been represented as in a state not only of habitually frequent but /continual/ constant delinquency as towards God: and not only this or that man but every man.

    Towards himself and those offences of which he has self regard himself as /having been/ being guilty a man will naturally be disposed to regard with an indulgent eye offences of the /[...?]/ same nature committed by others will not find in his bosom motives tending with /such great/ equal force and efficiency to dispose him to indulgence.

    Violent and notorious are the influences in which by religion in general, Christian in particular, antipathy is excited.

    4.

    Of religious terror, as above, religious antipathy, is a fruit. By the terror all men are represented as offending against [...?] [...?] to God. Indulgent to himself, each man taking part with God will be disposed to avenge him upon others.

    No God so jealous as the God of the Jews and Christians.

    Without any assistance from religion, differences in point of opinion, and differences in point of task are both of them sources /grounds/ of antipathy, the fertility of which is more than sufficiently productive. In another case is the cause that is the analogy of this to the other phenomena of the human mind, altogether easy of explanation: but be the cause what it may the effect is not less /less certain/ abundant, or/ less notorious.

    But whatsoever /it/ they may have been independently of religion, under and by virtue of religion, and the Christian religion beyond any other, its efficiency has been prodigious, and of course its mischievousness proportionable.

    /By/ Other religions asceticism itself has been carried and continues to be carried to still greater lengths: witness the Mahometan and the Hindoo. But by man of [...?] has /any thing/ equal excitation equal efficiency equal mischievousness been given to that antipathy which has /found in/ asceticism for its cause /source/.

    /Independently of/ Without /assistance from/ religion antipathy in general and in particular antipathy /springing bred from this source [...?] finds resistance /to/ every where in its endeavours to vent itself on its objects, /and /in general/ preys mostly upon itself/ and as far as it operates at all operates and preys upon itself. Under and in /and through/ religion /by the help of religion/ it finds power and with that power pretence for giving itself out finding its appropriate gratification/ at the expense of the object which excited it/ and preying upon the object by which it was excited.

    Even religion apart difference in task and d o in opinion are cases of antipathy: cause i.e. analogy to other psychological phenomena not easy of explanation, effect indubitable.

    Under religion particularly Christian, these antipathies have been prodigiously heightened and then mischievousness proportionally encreased.

    12.

    Among Hindoos and Mahometans asceticism has been carried higher since antipathy derived from asceticism.

    13.

    Religion apart, antipathy finds in its endeavours to gratify itself, opponents: and in religion, co-operators and practitioners.
