Jug. True

Ch. 23* John […?]

Time per John sole narrator: between the talk with Nicodemus, & that with Samaritana

Place. Judæa? Ænon near Salim John III. 23.

In Ch. III 33 {no man receiveth his testimony} only John who thereupon gives him his (Johns) v. 33 He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true!

Thus continues the history of the connection between John and Jesus and comes before the story of John’s baptizing Jesus as per Ch. I I and that of John’s sending his disciple to Jesus as per Ch. 24. It is after this viz. when John is already in prison that John is represented as doubting whether Jesus is the Messiah /Christ/, and sending his disciples to see and report. John takes no notice of the near relationship which according to Luke alone subsisted between John & Jesus: and the concert between their Mothers.

Ch. 23

* John declares to the Jews that Jesus is his superior, and is the Christ that as yet nobody believes in him but he (John) but that sooner or later Jesus will increase while John decreases – Accordingly after this Jesus’s disciples baptize more than Johns do.

John III. 25 to 36. John IV. 1 to 4. Luke silent. Matt. silent. Mark silent.
