Ch. Paul’s Doctrines
8 § Causes of P.s Asceticism
§ 4 Paul against Jesus as to marriage &c
Having seen the cause of the doctrine / Of this doctrine Of this really unnatural doctrine / now mark among the consequences―the subsequent―the still continuing / present / consequences―mark this striking / most prominent / one the forced celibacy of the Romish Clergy. In Paul’s situation and practice the creators and preservers / authors and supporters / of it / the institution / found for themselves an operating and determining motive: in Paul’s doctrine they found a / their / warrant―their but too sufficient warrant. Behold the spawn of Paul all these men of chastity whether real or pretended with which the Catholic part of the world is infected: in the male votaries behold the instruments and accomplices of his successors, in the females the victims.
Such is / Behold above / the policy of the Catholics. Behold now the consistency of the Protestants. The adopters of the system are condemned by them and vilified: the friends of it not the less worshipped and glorified. But the chains which by this judaizing Greek had been fastened on the Christian world have been too strong as yet to be burst.
