II. Pleasures of the bed in the eccentric shapes.
Under this head, /for/ very little matter of observation will be necessary. /there
be any demand./ Under the former heads the motives by which the principle /dæmon/ of
asceticism was put in motion have been indicated and proved.
To very few of either sex—and to those of the male still fewer than those of the
female are the pleasures of /sensations that belong to/ this sense matters of entire
indifference. But some there in whose instance the desire excited by these pleasures
in some eccentric shape is stronger even than the desire excited by those same
pleasures in the ordinary and thence more natural shape. In these instances, the
‘distraction’ to the rival power of which this saint was so busily employed in
opposing the power of mysterious terrors would in a correspondent degree be more
efficient.
Under this head nothing more remains than to produce the passages in and by which
the condemnation passed by /war waged by/ Paul against the pleasures of the bed in
these shapes is contained.
Proofs of the war waged by Paul against the pleasures of the bed in their eccentric
shapes.
