5 Mode of operation

Nor is this the worst: for while they are independent of the people whose interests they profess to serve, they are dependent of those other men /fellow sharers in power/ to whose interests essentially and unchangeably opposite to those of the people, to those /the only persons/ for whom in pretence and profession they are in trust, they are exposed to removal, at the hands of the Monarch - the whole body of them together, as often as such is his pleasure; at the hands of the Members of the House of Lords, their respective patrons, a proportion of them amounting to a majority: exposed, though not in form yet what is worse in effect; though not by the force of the legal sanction, by a perverse and mischievous application of the force of the popular or moral sanction; and being in the opinion of men of that class that is of all the men with whom they live, on the part of the nominee an act of infamy not to remove himself out of the House when by a word, or by any intimation howsoever indirect and gentle, called upon to make the sacrifice
