What the value of the esteem and sympathy of the men of public virtue and wisdom in

other nations may be to you, or in your eyes, I will not take upon me to say, /it is

for you to say, not me./ //it is not for me to take upon me to say// That you may not

in any case have these good wishes - as, in every case, the lesser evil, evil as it

is, has, when compared with the greater evil, their good wishes - I will not take

upon me to say. But if, after all this that you will have seen you should persist in

the endeavour to hold in your grasp this shadow of advantage, this question

concerning the probable result in the shape of national honour or nation dishonour

Seeking to keep fast or impose your yoke the yoke of your rulers on these your

kinsmen with what consistency can you complain of the yoke which you have so happily

cast off? with what prospect could you look to them for sympathy in the event of its

being reimposed or endeavoured to be reimposed on you?
