As civilisation spread /grew/ and the public mind in every branch of it derived /had imbibed/ strength from exercise and ------ from expansion, the man of rank in every line, that of the soldier excepted, became better and better qualified, even without appropriate study, for the task of judicature. Unhappily as power encreased /as faculties strengthened/, the difficulty of the task encreased with it. The feet that were to tread the labyrinth now became stronger, but the labyrinth had become much more intricate /grown in extent/, and the turning and winding in it more intricate. The demand for appropriate knowledge was perceived: for the need of it lay upon the surface of things. The demand for ----- /------/ of the interest was not perceived: for the interest of suitors - of the people in their capacity as suitors or in any other capacity, being little regarded, the opposition between their /that public/ interest and the personal interest of the man of law was little heeded: and the union of private interest - in other words the union of interest with duty - that union without which nothing good is ever done, is one idea even now scarce familiar enough to official eyes, not to be ---- at will set aside /put by/ under the name of --------.
Time it is that the /the/ intricacy of the law, grown up and still ------ every day, partly under /perhaps ----- ------/ the influence of natural causes, partly by the ------ purposely /designedly/ given to it for other and more general and ----- purposes, has swelled to such a pitch as to leave secured to the profession of advocates a monopoly of judicial power. Advocates who /whose ambition/ under their original name of law apprentices were /was/ formerly content to learn law for themselves for becoming advocates of a higher class under the name of serjeants, now by ---- of the same sort qualify themselves to be made judges.
