Jug. True

Ch. 108 Arrestation

Pp. Time immediately after the supper: viz. per tres the bread breaking per John the feetwashing supper

Place per tres, Olives Mount. per John over the brook Cedron: then per Matt. & Mark alone Gethsemane.

Mark {while I shall pray} These three alone were the appointed Watchers

Luke XXII 40. {Temptation} viz. to abandon him or join in giving him up.

Matt. XXVI. {Zebedees} These then were the two favourites. John whom he ‘loved’ one of them.

Matt {sorrowful} Mark {sore amazed} Matt & Mark {very heavy}

Matt & Mark sorrowful unto death tarry and watch. What cowardice for a self intended conqueror! Compare it with American Savage fortitude. Compare it with the Jew Maccabees.

Luke {Angel strengthening him} – And all to no purpose. Abundance more about his […?] anxiety to escape the arrestation thence exhortation to them to be vigilant they notwithstanding sleepy through despondency or indifference

John {Fell to the ground} Another quasi miracle in John alone a miracle to no purpose.

John {lost none} i.e. been the ruin of.

Luke {Smite with the sword} Question reported. No answer till this stroke[?] had been made. Per John, the slayer Simon Peter: per tres, unnamed. Per omnes the ear struck off. Per Luke alone the ear healed. Did it immediately grow again? this a miracle and to no purpose, no one but the reporter Luke noticing it as such.

Matt. {Legions of Angels} Sole reason for not commanding them that if so the Scriptures would not be fulfilled. What Scriptures? were there any that the Messiah instead of being a Conqueror should die in the attempt? Did he know of these Scriptures? If all his object was dying, how came he to be so afraid of it?

Matt & Mark. Disciples {all forsook him and fled}

Mark alone {Young man – linen cloth – fled naked} It looks as if this youth still stuck by him after the Apostles had left him. Is not John the Evangelist said to be the disciple John? Yet John the Evangelist takes no notice of his having been of the committee of three, taken apart from the other Apostles.

Ch. 108

Arrestation of Jesus – his faintheartedness – Notwithstanding his exhortation to watchfulness. Three favourite Apostles set to watch to prevent surprize – their sleepiness through despondency or indifference. Under the guidance of Judas the police come upon them by surprize – Attempt at defence by the sword short and fruitless

Luke XXII 39 to 53. Matt. XXVI 30 to 58.  N.B Matt. XXVI 31 to 35 is taken out of order in the procedure[?] of the synopsis to confront with Luke’s account of the same matter. So Math. XIV 27. 28. 29. 26.
