Prejudice

Of the union of /between/ sinister interest with prejudice in both its sorts acting in the same sinister direction and inbred /general/ weakness suffering itself to be carried on in the same direction is composed what with reference to the right and proper path © the path that leads to the only legitimate end so often mentioned © may be termed the ”seductive force•: the forces whatsoever they are, the tendency of which is to keep the end /human/ conduct of the person in question on the /that same/ right and proper path, and thereby to oppose and counteract that same seductive force may be termed the corresponding guardian power or ”tutelary force•.

In The secuctive force is /may be seen/ in other words the force of the temptation which applies to the case: the ”temptation•, that is to say the inducement to take and pursue the ”wrong• the sinister path. in The guardian power the tutelary force is the opposing sanction: the inducement by which the individual /mind/ is urged to pursue and keep notwithstanding /in spite of/ the action of the seductive force, the right and proper path as above.

Taken by themselves /itself/, none of /no one of all/ these expressions would amount to any thing: but when their import is explained by their relation /relation/ to the all commanding and only legitimate end, they will be found not only of use but of indispensable use.
