Verses 24. 1 to 5. Praise of the Macedonians for their liberality to him for the saints.

6 to 15: Earnest exhortations to vie with them in the like liberality.

16 to 24 Warm recommendation of Titus, and a nameless brother sent with him.

Ch. IX

Verses 15. The whole employed in stimulating them to give their money viz. to Titus when he sent for it as per VIII Shame to them if the Macedonians are more prompt and bountiful

Note here as elsewhere long and striking parenthesis. Of the 15 verses, two forming each of them one of these parentheses.

Ch. X.

Verses 18. composed of boasting, bragging all the while that he does not boast.

6 Having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.

9. That I may not seem as if I would terrify you with letters

10 For his letters (say they) are weighty and powerful(!) but his bodily presence weak, and speech contemptible … they ‘such as we are in word by letters, such also in deed when present.

Ch. XI.

Verses 33. All composed of boasting of his wisdom, his talents, his disinterestedness, his sufferings and his other merits. Great jealousy of nameless false Apostles. So XII. II.

5: 6 I was not a whit behind the chiefest of the Apostles. Though rude in speech, yet not in knowledge.

8. ‘I robbed other churches taking wages (of these) to do you service.

16 to 21. 23 Nonsense about his being a fool as he says he is and bold and a boaster. Buffooning on paper.

22. Are they Hebrews? so am I. —Israelites? So am I.— seed of Abraham? so am I. (These are boasting of his being a Jew.

23 to 33. In many vague generalities, and some particulars but no time or place (probably mostly false) bragging of his sufferings

24. 25. Of the Jews 5 times received I forty stripes save one. Thrice beaten with rods, once stoned, thrice suffered shipwreck, a day and a night have I been in the deep.

32. 33 In Damascus let through a window in a basket down by the wall, to avoid King Areta.

Ch. XII

1

Verses 21. 1 to 13. More boasting —14 to 21 them with his merits and fears lest he should not find them believers, well to him.

1 to 4. It is not expedient for me to glory: I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord. Thereupon story of a man who was caught up into the third heaven and in paradise and heard unspeakable things whether in or out of the body he can not tell ( Was this to be taken for himself?)

6. He won’t be a fool he will refrain from boasting, lest any one should think too well of him.

7. 8. Nonsense about abundance of revelation— a thorn in the flesh: messenger of Satan buffeting him, then beseeching of the Lord that it might depart from him — strength made perfect in weakness

10. He therefore takes pleasure in infirmities ‘(and also bad things) for when I am weak, then am I strong.

11. 12. 13. In force — ye have compelled me, for I ought to have been commended by you. The signs of an Apostle have been wrought in you. sayings, wonders mighty deeds.

21. ‘Uncleanness, fornication and lasciviousness many of you have committed.’

Obscure incoherencies. In force he thus scolds them at a distance lest if present, he should be obliged to scold them still sharper. If I come again I will not spare 2 In /i.e. by/ the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established — profit made.
