Jug. Util and True—Connection

to be given to human conduct as produces more net comfort than would have place otherwise: if the belief is, that, by such application, more suffering will be produced than suffering prevented, or enjoyment introduced, the belief is—that such retribution is destructive, not augmentative, of comfort: and so it will in effect be.
